How Much Does a Website Cost in Bristol?

Confused about website pricing, especially with the rise of AI? Here's a breakdown of what a professional website should cost for small businesses in Bristol and the South West (and everywhere else!)

A professionally designed website on a laptop screen

One of the first questions I get from Bristol business owners is: "How much should I actually be paying for a website?"

It's probably the most common question I see and completely valid. With the rise of AI, prices have gone all over the place and business owners need a new baseline.

The short answer

For a professional, custom-designed website for a small business in Bristol, you should expect to pay somewhere between £400 and £3,000+, depending on what you need.

I know this is a huge range (and not immediately helpful!), but this is the reason why:

DIY website builders (£0 – £30/month)

Tools like Wix, Squarespace, or WordPress.com let you build your own site. They are accessible and have the potential to result in some great sites, but often fall short on a couple of things:

  • They often use templates, which can take away the personal website feel.
  • Limited SEO control, meaning your site might not rank as highly as it should.
  • You spend time managing a website instead of running your business.

If your time is worth anything, this often isn't the bargain it looks like. And overlooking your website can have some damaging effects when people visit.

Freelance web designers (£400 – £2,500)

A local freelancer sits in a sweet spot between DIY website builders and a full agency; you get a more personal service and custom design without the agency price tag.

This applies beyond GoBurley too: Bristol has plenty of great web design options! If we're not the right fit, you should have no trouble finding something that works for you.

For most small businesses, the freelancer route makes sense. You get a website that truly represents your company, doesn't look like a generic template and all without the cost of a larger agency. That said, agencies do offer some genuine advantages worth knowing about.

Agencies (£2,000 – £10,000+)

Agencies charge more because they carry more overheads: offices, account managers, junior designers. In return though, they can produce seriously impressive work.

For a local café, hair salon, or trades business though, you'd likely be paying for a lot you don't need. To show you what's possible at the top end, take a look at igloo.inc. This is not just a website, but a full experience. Incredible stuff, but overkill for most small businesses.

For the majority of local businesses, the question isn't whether an agency can deliver results (they certainly can), it's whether what you're getting justifies the price.

What actually affects the price?

  • Number of pages - a 3-page brochure site costs less than a 15-page service site
  • Custom features - booking systems, online shops, and client portals add cost
  • Level of design - A simple design will cost less, whereas a complex design with 3D animations will jump up the price.
  • Ongoing support - such as hosting the site, maintaining it and more.

My honest advice

Don't just go for the cheapest option unless you know how to build with a DIY builder. A poorly built website can actively hurt your business; slow load times, no SEO, broken on mobile. But you also don't need to spend thousands if you're a small local business.

Get a few quotes, ask to see examples of their work, and make sure you understand what's included (especially hosting and future updates).
